A Proper Homecoming Meal

Whenever I go back to Hawaii to visit my family, (which doesn't happen as often as I'd like), very seldom do I ever request for my mom's home cooking. While other people who live away from their parents tend to crave their home cooking after not seeing them for a very long time, I don't. Growing up, I did most of the cooking. And so, the one or two times a year I get to go home, I would rather go out and eat all of the 'delicacies' that I would never be able to find on the mainland, like lau lau, kalua pork, ginger chicken, Portuguese sausage, and the freshest ahi and sushi you've ever tasted. On my most recent trip back home, I noticed that a new restaurant opened up, and being that I've eaten at nearly every single restaurant in town, (Hilo is a pretty small town), I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to check it out.


Hawaiian Style Cafe, as it's called, serves 'ono (delicious) local (Hawaiian) food in GINORMOUS portions. Ginormous as in their pancakes are twice the size of my head ginormous. Ginormous as in the food on my plate will last me a few meals ginormous. Not that I'm complaining or anything. It's been nearly a year since I've had local food (that I didn't have to cook myself), and I was ready to feast! My meal of choice was the Puhelu mixed plate--Korean fried chicken and Kalbi short ribs, served with the classic Hawaiian mac salad and a two scoops of rice. Can you say YUM?!?! A proper homecoming meal indeed.
