Atlanta Croissant Challenge (Part II)

Happy Monday everyone! It's been a little more than a week since I did Part I of my Atlanta Croissant Challenge, but Part II is finally here--the H&F Bread Co. in Westside Atlanta!

It's not exactly located in the middle of nowhere, but it definitely isn't where I'd expect to find a bakery. (Think industrial with a lot of wholesale buildings and big semi trucks). Thank goodness for my GPS--if I didn't have one I'd never be able to find it!

Did I even come to the right place?
Oh yes. Definitely.
I picked up a couple of croissants and headed straight home. (They didn't have a seating area.) As much as I wanted to eat it in the car, I also did not want to make a huge croissant crumb mess in the car. And trust me, croissant crumbs are probably the hardest to clean/pick up, because every time you try to pick them up, they break into even more tiny pieces!

I made sure to take my sweet sweet time to judge this bad boy. My conclusions--

Appearance: It was a lot bigger than I'm used to, probably twice the size the croissant I had at Alon's. Maybe this is because H&F is an American bakery, an thus bigger portions? Just a hypothesis. I'm not going to complain though, that just means there's more for me to enjoy!

The exterior in one word--CHEWY. The complete opposite of what I expect a croissant to be! Any other part of the exterior that wasn't chewy was dry, and almost stale. Note to self: looks can be very deceiving, even when it comes to food.

As for the interior, it was completely lacking in butter and flavor. To make things worse, the layers of pastry got drier and drier as I worked from the inner to outer layers. Complete disappointment. (At least it made for a pretty picture.)

Overall croissant rating: 2 out of 5 stars.

I know I know, it's a little harsh, but I have high expectations for these croissants! And this, my friends, was far from a five star rating.
