Camping Beauty Essentials

In a couple of weeks, I'll be jetting off to Seattle for Ruben's (annual) family camping trip. While I'm excited to go back to Seattle and spend time with his family, I can't help but be a bit nervous--I haven't gone camping since I was 13. The one and only time I went camping, it was in the middle of the Hawaiian "desert", there were no toilets or showers, and there was a scorpion in my tent. Scarred by my horrific camping experience, I told anyone who would listen that if I ever went camping again, it would be in a hotel!

Until now, that is. I'm not quite sure how I ended up in this situation, or how Ruben convinced me to go, but the bottom line is, I'm going. One of my biggest concerns about being in the wilderness for nearly a week is figuring out how to look as cute and pretty as possible. I know that camping is supposed to be all about looking natural and being one with nature, but I'm just going to say it, I still want to look good, dammit! (I promise I'm not high maintenance!)

I'm not saying that I need to wear my Jimmy Choo's or a smokey eye at the campsite, I just want to look as flawless and put together as possible...in a low maintenance kind of way. With that said, here are some camping beauty essentials that can help you achieve a flawless, "low maintenance" look. Don't worry if it looks like there's a lot of makeup--I'll explain everything in just a second!

1. BB CREAM

It's a primer, moisturizer, sunscreen, and concealer all in one. (In other words, less stuff to pack!) It doesn't get any better than this, ladies! More coverage than a tinted moisturizer, yet lighter than foundation, BB creams provide just enough coverage to give you a smooth, radiant complexion. It took me awhile to find a good one, but I finally found something that rivals my Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation: Yves Saint Laurent 'Top Secrets' BB Cream.

2. EYEBROW PENCIL

You'd be surprised at how much of a difference filling in your eyebrows makes! Not only do they enhance your eyes, but they also help frame your face, giving you a nice, polished look. For a natural finish, choose a shade that's 1-2 shades lighter than the color of your hair. I've been using Anastasia Beverly Hills 'Perfect' Brow Pencil for years, and I couldn't recommend it enough!

3. WATERPROOF MASCARA

I never leave my house without mascara. Ever. In my opinion, it gives the illusion of wider, more awake eyes and gives them a much more intense and dramatic look. So you can bet your butt that the mascara is coming with me on my camping trip! Chances are, you're going to get a little wet and sweaty doing camping activities, (I'm still not exactly sure what that consists of), so make sure you choose a waterproof formula. Yves Saint Laurent 'Volume Effet Faux Cils' Waterproof Mascara is the best I've ever come across--it lengthens and volumizes your lashes, and has excellent waterproof staying power!

4. LIP STAIN AND/OR TINTED LIP BALM

Lip stain is kind of like lipstick on steroids--it gives you the same pigmentation as lipstick would, but it lasts all day long! I find that having some color on your lips brightens up your whole complexion and makes you look more...well, alive. Because this summer is all about bright colors, I recommend something like Yves Saint Laurent 'Rouge Pur Couture' Glossy Stain in 15 Rose Vinyl. Just apply it once in the morning and forget about it. No touch-ups necessary! On the other hand, if you're just looking for a hint of color because you don't like the intensity of a lip stain, opt for a tinted lip balm instead. Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment comes in a variety of shades, and has SPF 15, a must when spending a lot of time outdoors!

5. EYELINER  (optional)

Is mascara not enough for you? Do you need a little more drama? Apply eyeliner (brown for a more natural look, black for a more dramatic look) along your top lash line to give the illusion of thicker eyelashes. Feel free to use eyeliner along with the mascara, or in lieu of it. My recommendation: MAC Eye Kohl in Teddy or Smolder. Easy to apply, easy to blend.

6. CONCEALER (optional)

For those of you who like a little extra coverage, use concealer with your BB cream to help conceal those pesky dark circles and eye bags. I'd imagine it coming in really handy after a restless night of tossing and turning on an uncomfortable sleeping pad. I'm a pretty light sleeper, so for me, concealer will be a must. Yves Saint Laurent 'Touche Eclat' Radiant Touch is a great option--"it's like 8 hours of sleep with the click of a pen!"

7. BRONZER (optional)

Because you'll most likely be spending most of your time outdoors and getting a lot of sun exposure, I personally think you don't really need to bring bronzer with you on your camping trip. However, if you feel like you need a little extra boost with your complexion, or if you want to do a little bit of contouring, by all means, bring the bronzer! My go-to bronzer has always been the Benefit Hoola Bronzer, and always will be!

8. POWDER (optional)

A BB cream should be sufficient enough when you're camping, but if you want extra staying power or if you have extra oily skin, then a powder may prove to be useful for you. Bare Minerals Mineral Veil is a great option, and it has SPF 25!

Finally, here are a few more items you might want to consider having in your camping beauty bag, whether or not you decide to wear makeup:

9. OIL BLOTTING WIPES

A much better option than using powder to get rid of any extra oil or shine. Small enough to keep in your pocket, MAC Blot Film is perfect when you're out and about gallivanting in the wilderness.

10.  MAKEUP REMOVER WIPES

If you're going to be wearing a little bit of makeup when you're camping, it's important to have something to remove everything at the end of the day. Even if you decide not to wear makeup, MAC Wipes are great to clean your face from any sweat or dirt that gets on it.

11. THERMAL WATER

Cool and refreshing, thermal water is great to use throughout the day for a quick pick me up or even to wash your face! My thermal water pick: Vichy Thermal Spa Water.
